How Women and Men Can Benefit from Bio-Identical Progesterone

While attending the Cenegenics/ Age Management Medicine Conference in Las Vegas, we heard so many positives health benefits of bio-identical hormone therapy.  And, that there is NO DOWNSIDE to bio-identicals with very limited contraindications for most people.

Physicians often tell women that if they have had a hysterectomy, they do not need to supplement with progesterone, only with estrogen.  This is a huge oversight as progesterone balances estrogen.  Estrogen that is not balanced with progesterone can lead to a host of health problems, including breast cancer.

Today it is much more commonly known that progesterone can alleviate premenstrual symptoms, irregular periods, migraines, depression and insomnia.  However, did you know that progesterone does much more than this?

Here are eight healing benefits associated with progesterone:

  1. Men and women have receptors for progesterone throughout their bodies.  Progesterone supports healthy bones, breasts, heart, liver and brain tissue in both men and women.
  2. Progesterone improves cholesterol levels.
  3. The benefits of progesterone carry over to men, too!  Both benign hyperplasia and prostate cancer are linked to excess estrogen.  Progesterone inhibits the aromatase enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogenic compounds that can cause prostate cells to mutate.  Therefore, minimal amounts of progesterone replacement has potential for preventing prostate cancer, while safely boosting levels of free testosterone.
  4. Progesterone can help with improving deep sleep. Doc has prescribed this for many women and some of his male clients with good results.
  5. Progesterone is important for increasing brain cognition and memory.
  6. Progesterone stimulates the brain’s GABA receptors which are our feel-good, calming neurotransmitters. This is why it may help alleviate PMS symptoms such as migraines in women with low progesterone levels.
  7. Progesterone has multiple functions in the central nervous system.  It regulates cognition, mood, pain and inflammation, mitochondrial function, neurogenesis and regeneration, myelination and recovery from traumatic brain injury.
  8. Progesterone may help to prevent the mental decline that occurs with aging.  Progesterone has been shown to increase neuronal energy production and protect brain cells against damaging hyperexcito-toxicity from foods or medications.

If you supplement with progesterone, please be sure that you are using bio-identical progesterone, which is identical to the progesterone that your body makes, and not synthetic progestins, which are not the same molecule and have negative effects on your health.

The Healing Power of Vitamin K: Are you Getting Enough?

Through my research for our Bone Builder’s Bootcamp, I have discovered the startling connections between Vitamin K, your bone health and cardiovascular health.  Doc and I have noted the trend toward increased arterial calcification with the use of high-dose calcium supplementation when given without other key bone nutrients. Science now indicates these trends are strongly related to vitamin K status, particularly to inadequacy of vitamin K2. The research below shows that vitamin K2 plays an important role in keeping calcium in the bones...

What are Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)?

What are Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)?

BCAAs are a group of three essential amino acids – isoleucine, leucine, and valine – that the body cannot produce and needs to obtain from dietary sources. They take part in several metabolic processes in the body, are precursors in the synthesis of alanine and glutamine, and make up about one-third of skeletal muscle. During aerobic exercise of long duration (such as long-distance running, cycling, or swimming), the body may break down muscle in order to release BCAAs to be used as energy. Supplementing with BCAAs during or after a...

Do your fish oils make the grade?

It’s important to realize that not all fish oil supplements are created equal. Many of the supplement labels can be confusing to the consumer. The amount of EPA and DHA taken each day is dependent on your personal needs and should be determined by yourself and your doctor, however here are a few things that should be considered no matter which company you decide to go with: Does the fish oil supplement remove contaminants like mercury, dioxins, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)? How much EPA and DHA are you getting from each serving? Has...
