Are You Gluten Sensitive?
If you are gluten sensitive, your body does not have the ability to break down and digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Your body reacts to gluten as if it were a virus. It launches an immune reaction that can cause or worsen a wide range of chronic health problems such as joint and bone pain, skin issues like exzema, fatigue, and osteopenia (see below for more).
Gluten sensitivity is different from an allergy. Allergy symptoms go away when the offending substance is removed. Not so with gluten sensitivity.
Gluten sensitivity can cause inflammation throughout the body that can lead to a range of problems. It can result in permanent organ damage and a hyperactivated immune system-even if you have no symptoms!
Who should be screened for gluten sensitivity?
Because research has shown that as many as 30% of all Americans may be gluten sensitive, and that 1 in 225 have a severe form of this sensitivity causing the intestinal disease called celiac sprue, a case can be made that everyone in America should be screened for gluten sensitivity. However, there are people with various risk factors or diseases that are at greater risk of developing gluten sensitivity who should undoubtedly be tested. These include:
- Microscopic colitis
- Relatives of gluten-sensitive individuals
- Gluten-sensitive individuals 1 year after treatment

I initially saw Jeanne Peters for fatigue and weight loss. She suggested a stool test which came back positive for for gluten sensitivity, malabsorption, and soy sensitivity. I quit eating soy burgers, gluten and added more healthy fats into my diet. After 6 weeks, I dropped 7.5 lbs, my energy is better and I am interested in re-testing my thyroid to see if has improved, too.~ Jack Miller, Redondo Beach
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis and arthritis at 44 years old. My doctors advised me to use the drugs fosamax and celebrex to control my symptoms. I chose instead to follow Jeanne's advice and go gluten free. Now, 2 years later my arthritis is gone and my T-Scores are almost within the ideal range. I am thrilled to feel great and live a life without meds! ~Jenny McDowell, Palos Verdes
